<image:title>Blog Posts - 30 Seconds - I was having a bad morning recently. I was back in a court room for the first time since my sentencing back in early 2017. On that day I pled guilty and was sentenced to concurrent 7-year prison terms for committing felony armed robberies at a small bank. Now I was back in court to seek a modification to the terms of my probation. During the proceedings back in court I was faced again by the same prosecutor from 2017 who wanted to lock me away for the rest of my natural born life. She was vindictive then, and vindictive still. Anyway, I left court angry at the way this prosecutor portrayed me and my family to the judge. She bent the facts again to fit her narrative. I am ashamed to admit it, but I was riled up. Well, honestly, I was pissed. Immediately following this court appearance, I was on the road, driving up to a prison in Massachusetts to do a library installation as part of my job for Freedom Reads.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog Posts - 23 Million: What you are NOT, and being thankful for it - Between Thanksgiving and into December’s frenetic scramble during the holidays, we find ourselves taking an inventory of our lives; looking at the things we should be thankful for – including our family, a good career, internal peace, financial blessings and more. It is traditionally a time of reflection on the past year, combined with our hopes and plans for the New Year to come. That all said, the holidays can also be a time of stress. We can easily get caught up in all the craziness – the cooking, hosting, travelling, buying gifts, managing relationships and dozens of other stressors that inevitably come around these last five weeks of the year. On the Friday following Thanksgiving, my wife had set us up as a family to volunteer at a soup kitchen and help serve meals to the homeless here in Hartford. It was a wonderful experience for us as a family.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog Posts - Six, Seven & 29,200 - Recently I attended my High School’s Class of 1988 Reunion – our 35th. I was reticent about attending and it took some coaxing from my family and a few of my closest friends to go. The last reunion I went to was our 25th, 10 years ago and when I was still seen as a rather successful person in the conventional sense. The wonderful classmates who took their valuable time to put this event together were very supportive in the invite process, and openly pushed for my attendance. I would be walking into a room where I was not that husband, father, soccer coach, Mercedes Benz- driving country club alpha male – but now a convicted Felon and coming off a six-year stay with the Connecticut Department of Corrections. With the help of one of my best friends and his amazing wife basically holding my hand, I walked into that banquet room and radically accepted all that may come from it. As expected, my classmates were all very open, and happy to see me. Many showed love, support and an unconditional acceptance of all I had become and my journey through the dark forest since we had last met. The organizing classmates set up a table in the room with pictures of SIX of our classmates who were no longer with us. Each had a candle warming their picture on the table.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog Posts - Serenity Now! - Recently I received a phone call from a former boss from my wholesaling days. We had a remarkable conversation about the journey we have each taken since leaving MetLife about a decade ago. His story was about family, new grandkids, and continued business success. Mine was about sharing a cell with a sociopath and living in what amounts to a 6’ x 12’ bathroom with 2 bunks. Seriously though, we spoke deeper about the path I let addiction take me on, and how the road back has been rewarding and made wonderful by conversations like the one we were having. During our conversation, we talked about his boss back then, the man who basically ran the entire Life and Annuity business for MetLife. They are still in touch, friends before MetLife and still friends now. It was during the big boss’s opening presentation to our group back around 2002 that I was first introduced to the Serenity Prayer. He presented it as a mantra for living life and for conducting business. Its message provides sage advice for us all.</image:title>
